In a high-volume shipping environment, tape is often the last thing on your mind—until a pallet of returns arrives with popped seals or tampered contents. Not all adhesives are created equal. To ensure your packages arrive intact, you need to match your tape to your specific application, environment, and shipping method.
Below is a breakdown of the four primary sealing options and when and how to decide which one belongs on your pack line.
Best Use Case: Long-term storage in varying temperatures (non-extreme), retail packaging where aesthetics matter, and lightweight to medium-weight boxes.
The Advantage: Excellent UV resistance and clarity.
Hot Melt (Synthetic Rubber) tape is designed for a "quick tack." It is the preferred choice for automated shipping lines because it grabs the corrugated surface instantly.
Best Use Case: Fast-paced fulfillment centers, highly recycled corrugated boxes (which can be "dusty"), and heavy-duty shipping.
The Advantage: Superior tensile strength and the fastest "instant bond" in the industry.
When the temperature drops or the humidity spikes, typical tapes can lose their grip. Natural rubber adhesive remains aggressive even in the harshest conditions.
Best Use Case: Cold storage, unheated warehouses, and boxes with high "film" or wax coatings.
The Advantage: Works in the widest temperature range and sticks to surfaces where synthetic adhesives fail.
Best Use Case: E-commerce, high-value goods (tamper-evident), and heavy or overstuffed cartons.
The Advantage: 100% recyclable, tamper-evident, and requires only a single strip to secure a carton.
Even the best tape can fail if applied incorrectly. To maximize efficiency, consider the "System Approach"—pairing IPG tapes with an Interpack™ Case Sealer. (USA 2024-SB, USA 2024-SB SS, USA 2024-SB TTH)
The Checklist for a Perfect Seal:
Check Tension: Ensure your machine’s tape head is applying enough pressure to "wet out" the adhesive onto the fibers.
Length Matters: A standard 2-inch to 3-inch "leg" (the overhang on the sides of the box) is the sweet spot for structural integrity.
Wipe Down: If applying manually, always use a firm "wipe" across the top to activate the pressure-sensitive bond.
